Because all the latrine explosions had been caused by the villagers’ own children blowing up their own families’ latrines, the villagers had no one to blame. Though furious beyond words, they hardly dared cause trouble for Zhou Sinian.

In the end, the brigade captain tactfully explained how important farmyard manure was to the crops and asked Ming Dai to keep Zhou Sinian under control.

Only then did Ming Dai realize that Zhou Sinian had been causing trouble again.

No wonder he had recently taken to blowing up cow dung in the pocket dimension! She had thought he was merely bored. It turned out he had become addicted!

When she questioned him, Zhou Sinian remained quite indignant. “You were the one who said not to harm children. I didn’t harm any children!”

Ming Dai laughed in exasperation. “So you went and harmed their parents instead?”

Zhou Sinian did not dare argue. He merely muttered, “It wasn’t me who made them blow anything up.”

Ming Dai: “…”

Right, right! He had merely provided the tools of destruction out of friendship!

From that day on, the firecrackers were confiscated. Zhou Sinian had nothing left to play with and was terribly unhappy, while Big Rib and Little Rib heaved sighs of relief in the pocket dimension.

Niu Niu had never imagined that one day he would be forced to defecate.

He couldn’t produce enough!

There was simply never enough!!

Since Ming Dai had forbidden Zhou Sinian from going outside again, word soon spread through the village that Zhou Sinian had caught a cold.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Ming Dai brought Zhou Sinian into the pocket dimension and harvested every vegetable, melon, and fruit growing in its fields.

With the pocket dimension’s treasure-finding ability, harvesting became incredibly simple.

Zhou Sinian stood beside the little sheep, the foolish roe deer, and Big Rib and Little Rib, staring in stunned silence as vegetables and fruits of every kind obeyed Ming Dai’s commands. They rose automatically from the soil or detached themselves from the plants, then floated in orderly lines into the storeroom. Both humans and animals were completely dumbfounded.

Ming Dai had only just discovered that the pocket dimension could be used this way herself. Delighted, she even put on a performance for Zhou Sinian, making the fruits and vegetables dance. The scene was dazzlingly colorful.

This was the idiot author filling in an earlier plot hole—the previous descriptions of the pocket dimension had gone completely off the rails.

At first, Zhou Sinian was delighted. But after a while, he frowned and asked Ming Dai in confusion, “Ming Dai, if you can control the pocket dimension, why did we have to dig up the fields and plant everything by hand? Couldn’t you have just used your immortal magic to control it?”

Digging all that soil had been exhausting!

Ming Dai froze.

How could she admit that she had forgotten?

Certainly not!

“Ahem. My immortal magic hadn’t reached that level back then. It only became possible after I had cultivated it properly.”

Zhou Sinian looked at her. “Really?”

Ming Dai nodded firmly, then swiftly split open several huge watermelons. Every person and animal received half a melon.

Zhou Sinian immediately stopped asking questions. Taking the spoon Ming Dai handed him, he dug into the watermelon.

The moment he took a bite, sweet juice burst across his mouth. “Mmm! Ming Dai, this is delicious!”

Ming Dai also hugged her half of the watermelon and scooped a piece into her mouth. It was so good that her eyes narrowed with pleasure.

Now this was watermelon!

It tasted nothing like the artificially cultivated melons sold in supermarkets in her previous life. This was entirely natural, grown without a trace of pesticide. It was unbelievably delicious!

The only consequence of eating something so delicious was that, apart from Big Rib and Little Rib, both humans, the foolish roe deer, and the little sheep all ate themselves into a stupor.

Just as the two of them were busy turning over the soil and sowing new seeds, Liu Laifu arrived with a message: Liu Dazheng wanted to come to their home and visit Zhou Sinian.

Ming Dai agreed, but she was also astonished by the friendship between the two men.

When Liu Dazheng had previously run out of food, he had not asked anyone for help or left the small courtyard to seek justice from the brigade captain.

Yet now, merely because Zhou Sinian had caught a cold, Liu Dazheng—who had not gone out in a long time—had made a special trip to visit him.

Those two were quite something.

At the appointed time, Liu Laifu carried Liu Dazheng over. He also brought along the kitten Ming Dai had asked Aunt Huang to find.

The kitten sat in a small bamboo basket. It was a tiny yellow tabby, so adorable that it nearly made one’s heart melt.

Zhou Sinian glanced at it, and the pattern of its fur immediately made him uncomfortable.

Noticing that his expression had changed, Ming Dai carried the basket into her own room and put the kitten away first.

Liu Dazheng had come specifically to see his little brother Sinian. After all, the poor fellow had been ill for so long that he had not been able to visit and discuss knitting techniques with him.

Now Liu Dazheng sat on the heated brick bed, feeling the warmth beneath him. He looked at Zhou Sinian’s somewhat pale face, then turned toward Ming Dai with an expression of hesitation.

Ming Dai was pouring water for them and happened to meet his strange gaze.

“Uncle Dazheng, is something wrong?”

After hesitating for a long while, Liu Dazheng finally spoke.

He reached into his shirt and pulled out several crumpled bills, offering them to her. “Little Ming, if you’re short of money, just tell me. I still have a little here.”

Ming Dai stared at him in confusion. “We have money, Uncle Dazheng. If something’s wrong, just say so.”

Only then did Liu Dazheng stop hesitating. Tears suddenly streamed down his face. He grabbed Zhou Sinian’s hand as the young man was knitting and burst into tears, startling everyone.

“My poor brother Sinian! You’ve lost weight again!”

Ming Dai and Liu Laifu turned in unison toward Zhou Sinian, whose face was filled with bewilderment.

He had clearly gained two whole rounds of weight!

Was Uncle Dazheng’s eyesight failing him?

“Look at how pale your face is. Anyone can see that you haven’t been resting properly. Little Ming, don’t be stingy with the firewood. Make sure my brother Sinian’s heated bed is nice and warm. He’s sick—how can he sleep on a cold bed?”

Ming Dai was left dizzy by this barrage of words.

What did he mean?

Was he accusing her of mistreating his precious brother Sinian?

Heavens above! Zhou Sinian was the one who tended the fire himself!

He liked sitting at the head of the bed. If it got too hot, he complained that it burned his backside!

Liu Laifu looked at Uncle Dazheng, who was crying so bitterly, then reached down and touched the woven mat beneath him.

This poor man had never slept at the head of a heated brick bed. He did not understand that this was hardly cold at all. In fact, Liu Laifu slept this way every day.

As for Zhou Sinian, he had not been listening to Liu Dazheng at all. He was struggling to free his sleeve without twisting Liu Dazheng’s hand off.

Liu Dazheng was crying so sorrowfully that he did not notice he had wiped his tears all over Zhou Sinian’s sleeve.

Zhou Sinian frantically gestured for Ming Dai to pull him away. If she waited any longer, his nose was going to start running.

Looking at the two of them, Ming Dai gave a dry laugh. “Uncle Dazheng is right! I’ll go add more firewood immediately!”

With that, she climbed down from the heated bed in a huff.

Liu Laifu looked at the lively scene unfolding at the head of the bed and suddenly felt that he ought not to be there. He followed Ming Dai outside.

Ming Dai went to the woodpile and picked up a bundle herself, then made Liu Laifu carry another.

She crouched beside the opening beneath the heated bed and shoved both bundles of wood inside.

Liu Laifu had wanted to warn Little Ming that too much wood might cause the bed to crack from the heat. But when he saw her fierce expression, he did not dare say a word.

Forget it. He could not afford to offend any of these three. Better to stay quiet.

By the time they returned to the room, Zhou Sinian was already fidgeting miserably on the heated bed.

Liu Dazheng felt the temperature beneath him and was extremely pleased. “Little Ming, this is just right. Don’t worry. When spring comes, I’ll sell the baskets and give you all the money. Just don’t shortchange my brother Sinian on firewood.”

Before Ming Dai could say anything, Zhou Sinian panicked.

“No, no! Ming Dai, don’t add any more firewood. My backside is going to burn!”

He grabbed his knitting basket and tried to stand, only for Liu Dazheng to press him firmly back down.

“Don’t move! Brother Sinian, I know what I’m talking about. Sleeping on a cold heated bed for too long will make your lower back ache. A man’s back is important. You have to start taking care of it now!”

Ming Dai laughed so hard that she sprawled against the edge of the bed. It was far too hot up there, and her backside was burning too, so she had no desire to climb back on.

Watching the two men tugging at each other atop the heated bed, Ming Dai found it hilarious—and heartbreaking at the same time.

Liu Dazheng was not wrong. Years of sleeping on cold heated beds had damaged not only his lower back but also his digestive system. On top of that, he had suffered from polio since childhood, which made him far more sensitive to the cold than ordinary people.

He had been mistreated in the past. Sleeping on a cold bed and going hungry had been everyday occurrences for him. He must have been afraid that his beloved brother Sinian would suffer the same way, which was why he had swallowed his pride and reminded Ming Dai to take better care of him.

After all, according to his usual principle of never interfering in anything, he normally would not have spoken up.

He had simply overlooked one thing: Zhou Sinian was a young man in the prime of life, with a blazing inner heat of his own!

In the end, Zhou Sinian lost patience. He hauled Liu Dazheng up and placed him at the head of the bed, then immediately climbed down and stood beside Ming Dai.

Good heavens! If he had waited any longer, his backside really would have been cooked!

After Zhou Sinian impatiently explained everything, Liu Dazheng finally realized that he had misunderstood the situation. Embarrassed, he apologized to Ming Dai.

Ming Dai pulled some of the firewood out from beneath the bed. Once the temperature had fallen, everyone was finally able to sit on it again.
