Chapter 105: Revealing the Cause
Leaving the ward entrance, Zhao Fan leaned on his crutch and walked calmly a few steps behind.
No words were exchanged.
The silence made the atmosphere slightly awkward. Yang Yuqing glanced at Zhao Fan and smiled, asking, “Is coming out with me putting you in a difficult spot?”
Zhao Fan turned his head slightly. “How could that be?”
“Then why so quiet?”
Zhao Fan was speechless.
Could it be that he simply had nothing to say?
Yang Yuqing watched him, a faint smile tugging at her lips. She suspected that Zhao Fan, deep in thought, was already wrestling with inner conflict.
“All right, I won’t trouble you anymore. This is where we part. If you keep escorting me with that crutch, others might think I’m unreasonable, forcing you to stay.”
Zhao Fan coughed lightly. “Not at all.”
Though he said that, his steps had already come to a halt.
Yang Yuqing said goodbye and left.
Zhao Fan stood there for a moment, then instead of returning to the ward, he settled onto a chair in the hallway.
Nearby, a middle-aged man noticed Zhao Fan sitting and even turned his head to glance at him.
“Even young people have worries?”
Zhao Fan replied calmly, “Young people have families too. We’re not born from stones.”
The man coughed a few times. “Sorry about that.”
He was quick to recognize his mistake.
Zhao Fan looked away. “It’s nothing.”
After another half hour, Xiao Chen and Wang Kexin returned. Seeing Zhao Fan seated at the entrance of the inpatient department, both were somewhat taken aback.
Xiao Chen hurried forward. “Boss Zhao, why are you sitting here alone?”
Zhao Fan said, “Just came down, getting ready to go back up.”
Xiao Chen was speechless.
From his posture, it hardly looked like he had just come down.
“Ready to go up?”
Zhao Fan nodded. “Let’s go.”
He picked up his crutch, and Xiao Chen immediately moved to support him.
Wang Kexin also wanted to help but withdrew her hand just as she reached out.
The three of them moved slowly, step by step, back to the ward.
Not long after, Zhao’s father arrived.
“How is he?”
Zhao’s father brought supplies for the hospital stay, his face full of worry. He had never expected that just as the family’s life improved, something like this would happen—a family member beaten and hospitalized.
Then, seeing Zhao Fan’s leg, his anger only deepened.
“What happened to your leg this time?”
“Accidentally fell. It’s not serious.”
Zhao’s father felt a lump in his throat. “Are you sure it’s just a fall?”
Zhao Fan replied, “I have no reason to lie to you. By the way, this is Wang Kexin—she’s the one who helped bring my elder brother to the hospital.”
Changing the subject, Zhao’s father greeted Wang Kexin and thanked her repeatedly for her assistance.
After a few minutes of small talk, Zhao Fan asked, “Ms. Wang, I want to know what happened this time.”
Wang Kexin said, “I’m not clear on all the details. After the group who started the fight left, I vaguely heard the name Yang Qingqing. It seemed to be about something involving a child.”
Zhao’s mother exploded, “The Yang family again? How can that family—how could they be so…”
Zhao Fan hurried to soothe her. “Mom, don’t get angry, please.”
“How can I not be angry? That Yang family is like a persistent ghost. Even after the divorce, why do they keep fixating on us?”
Zhao’s mother wiped away tears. What kind of deity had they offended to attract such despicable people?
What could Zhao Fan say?
He could only pat her back gently and comfort her in a low voice.
Zhao’s father frowned. “What did the hospital say about the eldest son’s condition?”
Hearing this, Zhao Fan said, “I’ve asked Xiao Chen to check.”
Xiao Chen nodded and went to inquire.
Wang Kexin added some details. Zhao Fan thanked her and asked for her bank card number. When Xiao Chen returned, Zhao Fan told him to escort Wang Kexin home.
“I’m going to see the doctor.”
Leaving those words behind, Zhao Fan gave the ward space to his parents and called Chen Jianyu on the way.
“I’m at the First Hospital. Bring some people over.”
“All right, I’ll be there soon.”
In the doctor’s office, Zhao Fan handed over the examination reports.
“You haven’t received the brain CT results yet?”
“Yes.”
“Then wait until the brain CT is out before saying anything. If I show you now, it’s only a partial view. Once all tests are in, we can make a proper judgment.”
“How long will all the tests take?”
“Some will be ready tonight; others will need until tomorrow. It takes time.”
“Can’t it be sped up?” Zhao Fan’s expression darkened. “The patient is still unconscious. Is it safe to just give fluids and wait?”
Zhao Fan didn’t want to argue with the doctor, but Zhao Haitian had been unconscious for almost two hours. Without the test results, did they just intend to do nothing?
The doctor retorted, “Are you questioning our medical ability?”
“I’m questioning the hospital’s efficiency. It’s one thing if the injuries are on the arms or legs, but the patient was hit on the head and is unconscious. It’s been nearly two hours since admission, and you tell me the tests aren’t done yet. If the condition worsens and he dies during this time, can I sue the hospital for compensation?”
After Zhao Fan finished speaking, the doctor stood up sharply, his face darkening.
“If you think our hospital is incompetent, you are free to leave. Why waste time arguing with me here?”
Zhao Fan narrowed his eyes. “Say that again?”
Another doctor quickly intervened. “It’s nothing, everyone’s anxious. I’ll urge the lab to speed things up.”
“Urgent?” Zhao Fan sneered. “If the hospital can’t get the results quickly and needs the doctors to chase them, people might think the hospital is deliberately dragging its feet.”
“This…”
“Tell him what? He’s just looking for trouble.”
“Looking for trouble? Fine, refund my fees, and I’ll transfer the patient now.”
“The tests have been done. On what grounds do you want a refund?”
“Ridiculous. If you don’t provide the results, I’m not going to just leave him here to die. If you won’t refund, then use your hospital supplies to offset the fees.”
Zhao Fan began searching the office for something to smash.
“Wait, calm down. There’s no need for this…” Another doctor tried to reason.
At that moment, several people entered the office. Seeing the scene, they all froze.
“Oh? About to fight the doctors? Hold on, we have some questions for the doctors.”
The doctors were pulled aside. The leader smiled and asked, “When will the test results be ready?”
Zhao Fan raised an eyebrow. So they had come for the same reason.
“The results will be out soon.”
Faced with Zhao Fan’s imposing presence, the doctor spun around and left.
“Soon? What exactly do you mean by ‘soon’?”
“Well…” The doctor’s eyes flickered. “It depends on the lab…”
“Think carefully before you answer.”
A dagger was suddenly pressed against the doctor’s forehead, clearly threatening to stab if the answer wasn’t satisfactory.
Zhao Fan crossed his arms calmly. “Don’t expect much from this hospital’s test results. Transfer him.”
“Are you here for the test results too?”
