Chapter 20: Farming Mode, Accelerated Growth with Bone Meal
Emerging from the village, Chen Fan walked while silently sorting through the issues encountered there, his thoughts circling around the matter of the “Goddess Lady.”
A cold wind suddenly swept past, prompting him to instinctively wrap his coat tighter around himself. The chill instantly sharpened his senses.
“Ram, how many supply crates did you find?” he asked.
“Master, my sister and I found four supply crates and took down two gray bears,” Ram replied, transferring the items from her inventory to Chen Fan.
Chen Fan opened the inventory with great excitement. This was what true luck looked like—undeniable fortune.
Besides the basic food supplies, there were four iron ingots, two down jackets, two down quilts, four wheat seeds, six pieces of leather, and a diamond pickaxe.
Chen Fan grinned broadly and gave Ram and the others a thumbs-up. “Well done.”
“Master, it’s our duty,” Ram said, a little embarrassed.
“To reward you, when we get back tonight, I’ll cook something special for you. It’s really delicious—tonight you’re in for a treat. No fighting over it!”
“Really?” Ram and Rem were thrilled.
But Yang Kelly, standing nearby, looked at Chen Fan in disbelief as if hearing something outrageous.
“Of course! Once we plant the wheat seeds and use bone meal to speed their growth, we’ll harvest wheat and grind it into flour to make noodles,” Chen Fan said with a happy smile—that was his signature skill.
The group chatted and laughed all the way back to the wooden cabin.
Standing before the cabin, Chen Fan carefully surveyed the surrounding land, already formulating plans.
“To cultivate farmland around the cabin. The bones we got from killing skeletons can be broken down into bone meal to help the wheat seeds grow quickly,” he explained to Ram and Rem.
“Understood, Master!”
Without hesitation, Chen Fan crafted a stone hoe and an iron bucket, beginning to clear the weeds beside the cabin.
Ram and Rem eagerly followed suit, helping to clear the land.
Meanwhile, Yang Kelly returned inside to prepare dinner.
In the Minecraft world, weeds occasionally drop wheat seeds, but outside of supply crates and villages, seeds are scarce, making acquisition more difficult.
Wheat seeds, once planted and grown, can yield wheat and often more seeds upon harvest.
Wheat can be used to make bread or other varied foods.
Slowly, Chen Fan and his team leveled out an area measuring nine by nine blocks, cultivating three plots.
One plot was planted with wheat seeds, the others with carrots and potatoes, as well as pumpkins and watermelons.
They then fenced the area with wooden fences, leaving a gate, and placed torches on the fence posts to prevent monsters from entering.
The neat and orderly farm pleased Chen Fan, who loved keeping everything tidy in his Minecraft survival world.
Even his mine beneath the house was lined with stone steps, exuding an air of sophistication.
He had a bit of an obsessive-compulsive streak but also a small quirk: he liked placing crafting tables everywhere.
He fetched three buckets of water from the river and poured them into the center block of the field.
Gradually, the cultivated soil became moist.
Chen Fan planted five wheat seeds and then converted bones from his inventory into bone meal, sprinkling it gently around the seeds.
Miraculously, under the nourishment of the bone meal, the wheat seeds responded immediately.
They first swelled slightly, then sprouted tender green shoots, rapidly growing upward.
The delicate leaves unfolded before slowly turning golden.
Chen Fan followed this process repeatedly, harvesting eighteen wheats and twenty wheat seeds.
He replanted all the seeds in the field, satisfied with the results.
“Let’s go back and eat,” Chen Fan said with a wave, leading Ram and the others back to the cabin.
Ram glanced at the farm. “If we plant it here like this, won’t someone come to steal it?”
“People will definitely try to steal,” Chen Fan replied, “but with the four of us, one can always stay home to guard. Plus, we’ll fence off the farm separately, so there will be double protection.”
Seeing Chen Fan’s plan, Ram nodded without further comment.
Back inside, the aroma of cooking filled the cabin.
Yang Kelly had prepared a simple dinner. Though ingredients were limited, her careful preparation made the meal quite enticing.
They sat around the rough wooden table, beginning to eat.
While eating, Chen Fan discussed plans to eliminate the giant spider in the cave that night—without dealing with it, mining would be impossible.
Ram frowned, worried. “Master, that giant spider sounds fierce. Is it really safe?”
Chen Fan swallowed his food and replied confidently, “It’s definitely dangerous, but we can’t keep running from it. If we prepare well and devise a solid strategy, we should be able to defeat it.”
“You’re right, Master. We can’t shy away from challenges. My sister and I will do our best to assist you.”
“Chen Fan, have you already thought of a plan?” Yang Kelly asked.
“Of course,” Chen Fan said with full confidence.
The east wind blows, the war drums beat—who in Minecraft do we fear?
We just have to do it!
After lunch, they began organizing food and equipment.
Chen Fan crafted the last iron ingot into a shield for Ram, so now all four had iron swords and shields.
“Once we enter the cave, Ram and Rem will draw the spider’s attention, while Yang Kelly and I attack its weak spots with bows from behind,” Chen Fan methodically laid out the battle plan.
“Okay!”
“Got it, Master!”
With preparations complete, Yang Kelly dug out a three-by-three section of the floor. The cave was illuminated brightly by torches, as bright as daylight.
They cautiously descended toward the cave entrance.
Inside, the silence was profound except for the echo of their footsteps.
Reaching the previously sealed cave entrance, Chen Fan dug it open, releasing a damp, cold air.
He took a deep breath and stepped down the stone stairs first.
They carefully explored forward, listening attentively for any sounds.
When they arrived near the freshwater river, a faint hissing sound suddenly came.
Chen Fan whispered, “The giant spider is nearby. Stay alert.”
Before his words had even faded, the enormous spider slowly emerged from the depths.
Its huge body was covered in eight eerie, glowing eyes, and its fangs were chillingly sharp.
Without hesitation, Ram and Rem charged forward, swinging their iron swords to draw the spider’s attacks.
The enraged spider lunged at them, its sharp claws scraping the ground as it advanced.
Meanwhile, Yang Kelly and Chen Fan quickly drew their bows, aiming at the spider’s eyes.
Arrows whistled through the air, striking two of the spider’s eyes precisely.
The spider let out a painful roar.
Yet, the two arrows only dealt 20 points of damage—hardly a scratch for the giant spider with 240 health points.
